Dyson has a robot vacuum they’ll likely release this year to roll up on Roomba. Appearing in an FCC filing this week, the Roomba robot vacuum shows a collection of features that make this device seem at least as powerful as the previously-released , Dyson 360 Heurist. This new device sports a shocking blue and assurance that it works with a brand new Dyson Hyperdymium motor.

It’s not an issue really, as you can schedule it to clean when you’re not around. The Roomba’s run time is 75 minutes, but charge time is only 90 minutes, so you can schedule it to clean up twice a day or more. Alternatively, command it ad hoc to pick up crumbs after mealtimes. But there are changes from previous models, the most obvious of which is the shape of the robot vacuum itself, which seems wider and shorter.
“The robots had to do something that Roomba never had to do before — listen and be able to execute a very precise cleaning mission,” Mr. Angle said. The robot in the FCC filings looks like it’s built to stay much closer to the ground than the 360 Eye, which should allow the device to fit under low spaces, like under a couch. As noted by The Verge, this device differs from the 360 Eye and the more recently launched 360 Heurist, which are both taller and slimmer in order to navigate around tight corners and furniture. Pictures submitted also show a light ring, which could help the robot clean up at night. But, of course, the stair-climbing robot hasn’t yet been confirmed to be a real product.
The i7 has a low profile that means it can get under all sorts of obstacles, which is great. However, its primary means of navigation is to scan the ceiling with an upwards-facing camera – navigating a bit bissell crosswave cordless like a sailor, by the stars, but with your light fittings and whatnot as the ‘stars’. This is all very well in general, but as soon as the droid is under a sofa or wardrobe, it becomes partially blind.
It comes with three suction levels but, sadly, no automatic floor detection. Hence you will need to select a single suction level and stick with it, unless you indulge in the faff of programming it in the Dyson app to ramp up the power in certain areas. This reviewer tried it out on the highest power and it sucked big time, in a good way. However, the battery started depleting rapidly and after around 30 minutes it was desperate to get back to its base for a recharge. So I set it to the lowest suction level and, lo and behold, it still sucked well while the battery lasted a full 63 minutes – and this was on a combination of hard floor, carpet and lots of rugs. The upgraded Eufy 30C Max is a great example of how much robot vacuum cleaners have improved in recent times.
As of 2018, obstacles such as dog feces, cables and shoes remain very difficult for robots to navigate around. Keeping the Dyson 360 Eye maintained is as torturous as it should be, and it’s nice to have a brand concentrating on helping you to clean pieces instead of just removing them as they get dirty. These components would inevitably have to be replaced, but the robot’s architecture allows it simple to take good care of them and extend their longevity. It even gives you a visualization of where the robot is already, which is helpful. There’s a complete product manual integrated into the app that goes through the functionality of what it does, repair, and fault detection.
However, it builds on this with an Auto-Empty Station and will empty the on-board 14.2oz / 420ml dust canister automatically into a disposable bag after every clean. So you only have to worry about emptying the robot vacuum once a month or so. The Roborock S6 MaxV has dual cameras and a Lidar, so it’s quick when it comes to mapping a room, it’ll even mark obstacles like discarded shoes or furniture on the map, and snap a photo which can be seen in the app. The app even uses AI processing to identify the obstacle, which works most of the time. It works with both Alexa and Google Assistant, so you can use your voice to start it cleaning.
It can be unscrewed and removed from the side, but I found I never actually needed to do that, even for shoe laces it had eaten. Just press the release button on top, pull it out, lift the lid and shake into the bin. It cleans until it is obstructed and then proceeds to fill in the square before moving onto the next square. If the space doesn’t allow, such as the length of galley kitchen for instance, it will switch to what looks like a more logical zig-zag pattern. The Dyson Link app for Android and iOS allows remote control, scheduling and diagnosis of faults, in an easy-to-use manner.
