Dyson’s previous vacuums, the 360 Eye and 360 Heurist, have been taller and narrower than rival products built by iRobot and the like. This allows them tighter cornering around items like chair legs, but stops them from vacuuming under some furniture. It’s hard to gauge the exact dimensions of this new product , but it does seem to be wider and flatter than the Eye and Heurist.
If the space doesn’t allow, such as the length of galley kitchen for instance, it will switch to what looks like a more logical zig-zag pattern. The eye sits proud of the top to give it a 360-degree view of its environment, but it cannot see things that are shorter than the robot’s body. There are certainly Dyson fans out there who will buy a Heurist no matter what. If you cannot abide vacuuming, and only want to do it every couple of weeks to grab any spots a robot might have missed, then perhaps this vacuum is for you.
The other function I was hoping for was connecting the vacuum to my google home. I was able to do so successfully, but the voice commands are not robust enough. You can only turn the vacuum on or off, not command it to vacuum a specific section of the house. I was hoping I could tell it to vacuum a room I wasn’t planning on using at the time as a work around for the app not having that functionality, but this is also not possible. I guess the real issue is that for my house, the vacuum needs to go back to the dock to recharge before finishing. This creates a 45 minute vacuum cycle, 2 hour recharge, and 45 minute vacuum cycle for a total of almost 4 hours.

This limited understanding is where the ARL robots begin to differ from other robots that rely on deep learning, says Ethan Stump, chief scientist of the AI for Maneuver and Mobility program at ARL. Most deep-learning systems function reliably only within the domains and environments in dyson robot vacuum which they’ve been trained. Even if the domain is something like “every drivable road in San Francisco,” the robot will do fine, because that’s a data set that has already been collected. If an Army deep-learning system doesn’t perform well, they can’t simply solve the problem by collecting more data. This opacity means that robots that rely on deep learning have to be used carefully.

Because I set the cleaning schedule immediately after installation, I no longer had to worry about switching on the robot.
From air purification to hair care and, of course, vacuum cleaners, Dyson has slowly and successfully branched out into new sectors and now commands a presence in each market. Run the vacuum cleaner over new carpet and its bin will come back full of fluff; run it on a hard floor and you’ll be amazed at how much dirt this robot picks up. Running the vacuum cleaner through some tests with flour spilt on the floor in various locations, the 360 Heurist proved itself to be a winner. A few robot vacuums have a clever self-emptying feature, most notably those of the iRobot Roomba series.
Overall the apps are far better than leaning over to press a physical button on the machines, and the ability to use them from anywhere makes them invaluable. I know for myself, I wasn’t always home when I needed to have a quick vacuum done. They got rid of the brushes and bristles and utilized interlocking grooves in their place. There is also a sensor in the extraction chamber to note if the bars are caught on something like a cord or wire. A full charge from a dead battery will take three hours on a 980; however, you will get 2 hours of run time. In a real-world test, the charge lasts about an hour and a half, which is still twice as long as the Dyson.
Like some other Dyson products, the 360 Eye’s value is also questionable. Sure, I like 360 Eye’s app and the way it navigates around a room, but the Neato Botvac Connected has similar features, performs better in every category and costs $300 less. That doesn’t mean you won’t like Dyson’s shark cordless Wi-Fi model, just be sure to weigh it against the competition before you buy. As we’ve mentioned, this isn’t Dyson’s first robot vacuum, but it could be the first for the US. The 360 Hyperdymium follows up the previous models, the 360 Eye and 360 Heurist, except it’s flatter and wider.
The brush bar sports two types of bristles for carpet and bare floors, and stretches the whole width of the machine. The dustbin is on the small side at 330ml and we did find it needed emptying after every complete clean (even when the house was reasonably dust-free to start with). However, we liked that the machine comes with a lightweight charging base, it can be folded up when not in use or easily tucked away in a corner. We put the device to the test by using it in a very busy household across three floors of the home.
Appearing in an FCC filing this week, the Roomba robot vacuum shows a collection of features that make this device seem at least as powerful as the previously-released , Dyson 360 Heurist. This new device sports a shocking blue and assurance that it works with a brand new Dyson Hyperdymium motor. But when it comes down to comparing this bot with other smart models, it ultimately falls short.
