Pacific Cycle bought what was left of this iconic American mongoose bmx bike brand and started selling Schwinn models as “box store” bikes at Walmart, Target, and Toys R Us. Schwinn is one of the oldest bicycle manufacturers still up and running.
In a time when selling 10,000 of a particular bike was considered a success, the Sting-Ray sold 45,000 units in the first six months after its release. In 1972, Schwinn was making 6,000 bicycles a day with 2,000 workers in their Chicago plant and in 1974 an impressive 1.55 million Schwinns left the factory. The first bike had wooden wheels, and its earliest followers sported iron rims and hard rubber tires. These solid materials made cycling a jarring, uncomfortable experience. Though inflatable tires were invented as early as 1845, it wasn’t until 1887 in Belfast when John Dunlop put inflatable tires on his son’s safety bike that cyclists enjoyed the comforts of the pneumatic tire. The change was such an improvement in both comfort and speed that the inflatable tire became the industry standard by the early 1890s.
By 1957, the Paramount series, once a premier racing bicycle, had atrophied from a lack of attention and modernization. Aside from some new frame lug designs, the designs, methods and tooling mongoose bmx bike were the same as had been used in the 1930s. The Paramount continued as a limited production model, built in small numbers in a small apportioned area of the old Chicago assembly factory.
In 1934, Schwinn’s Aerocycle hit the streets rescuing a declining bicycle market. It was so popular in fact, that the likes of Ronald Reagan, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby would proudly show off their Schwinns.
The overall value of a Schwinn vintage bike will vary based on its condition, age, and scarcity. Irrespective of their age, most Schwinn cycles in good condition retain their value for a long time. It means that any bicycle more than 50 years old in a good or fair condition is likely to attract interest from other buyers. It also means that old Schwinn bikes before 1975 will be of greater value to collectors than a newer bike. Similarly, if the bike is scarce, such as the 1934 triplet or the Aerocycle, it may be priced in the thousands of dollars on eBay.
