The IC4 functions well as a stand-alone spin bike, plus you have the option of connecting to your device via Bluetooth and using popular interactive training apps. If you’re already highly motivated, you may not need the added inspiration that live streaming, on-demand, or virtual training can provide, but we think it’s nice to have the option. Unlike the more expensive competition, the IC4 does not come with a high-tech console for streaming workouts; you’ll have to use one you already have or purchase one for that purpose. It does have a device holder where you can dock your device for easy viewing, and it has a USB port to keep it charged while you ride.

Of course, your power will therefore not increase to reflect added resistance, so unless you pedal harder and faster, the game will slow you down on your mph. However, from my experience, I was still going faster than most people on a smart turbo, by nature of easier pedalling. The hard and narrow bike seat is my least favorite part of the Schwinn IC4, but I am trying to power through it. In any case, I assembled the replacement bike as described, and I don’t think this particular job is worth paying an additional $129 for the professional setup, provided the machine arrives in working order. Attaching the pedals was a bit more challenging, however—and not just because they’re reverse-threaded on one side.
Several members of the SNEWS team rode the bike for a couple of months this summer and found it steady, simple, comfy and ready to deliver a great workout. The 38-pound flywheel and gearing simulates the feel of road riding so even a devout road cyclist can get a great, natural-feeling workout indoors too — or outdoors since we often wheeled our bike onto the deck. Schwinn home exercise bikes are meant for people with smaller spending limits.

Smart bikes might require monthly subscriptions, especially when it comes to on-demand training and cycling classes.
