Aerotas has developed a workflow that enables surveyors to lock the relative accuracies in photogrammetry processing and shift the entire project to match a single ground control point. This ensures full-site accuracy without the need for manual PPK processing or ground control distributed throughout the entire site. Fewer ground control points translate to significant time savings in the field. A simple small-size landfill was chosen for testing purposes to recreate the conditions we think Phantom 4 is most suitable for.

It works pretty well, as long as your subject isn’t too small and doesn’t blend into the background. I was able to get it to follow me around with no problems when I wore a tan coat while standing on a green athletic field. The base station also includes a charging station and two sets of batteries, as well as a remote control, telemetry module, and an anemometer to gauge wind. It means no manual geotagging is needed when importing images to 3Dsurvey for processing. Further quality control was achieved by placing GCPs and establishing independent validation points.

It does mean however that you do not need to baby a Phantom and in case your drone does get damaged, the aircraft is easy to repair. Making most of these new features possible required a redesign. If an object is detected, the autonomously brakes and hovers to prevent a collision. This feature also comes in handy when the drone’s Return to Home function is initiated. As the drone returns home it alters its flight path as needed to maneuver above or around objects. DJI claims the Phantom 4 can fly for up to 28 minutes on a single battery. Based on my experience, expect to get minutes of flight time since the wise pilot lands a drone with power to spare.

Using Draw, the aircraft will fly along the flight path drawn on screen. As it flies, it will automatically brake and hover when it sees obstacles provided that the lighting phantom 4 is appropriate – no darker than 300 lux or brighter than 10,000 lux.
