Check how much noise you can endure before purchasing the pedestal fan.
One of the tallest fans we tested, this Pelonis model also offers fairly high power on all speeds – if you’re okay with its louder-than-average whirring. Pedestal fans either deliver air in one direction or throughout the room by oscillating. The oscillating feature, engaged via a knob on the back of the fan’s head, allows the head to pan back and forth to cool large areas.

A knob on the back of the fan head allows the user to select one of three speed settings, while a second control toggles the fan’s operation between standard and oscillation. A replaceable fuse in the power cord protects the fan from overloads. We found this Vornado fan simple to set up, as it slid in almost one solid piece out of the box, but we needed to assemble its two base halves together and then screw them tighter together using a screwdriver. A screwdriver was not needed to assemble the Honeywell Quietset Whole Room HYF290B tower fan, which was the easiest tower fan for us to set up.
The Double Blade also won’t recall your last settings when turned off and defaults to the lowest speed when powered on, without oscillation. It’s not a quiet fan, either, particularly on the highest settings, which makes it difficult to watch TV over without turning up the volume. And while the operation lights on the front will dim after several seconds, if you’re particularly sensitive to lights in the bedroom, you may end up covering the front of this one.
We kept wrestling with the three parts of the fan to make them work; it took us about 20 minutes longer to assemble this fan than it did all the others in our testing. Once assembled, though, we were able to set the fan to oscillate and found it cooled off our testing room nicely. However, we cannot recommend this fan due to its unnecessary difficulty in assembling what should be a simple grille attachment.
