So you like to be on the bleeding edge of technology and you want an autonomous robotic vacuum to help keep your floors clean. You have no doubt heard of the industry leader iRobot and their small army of Roomba vacs. It takes a while to get accustomed to the Roomba J7+, the $850 robot vacuum, and the Braava Jet M6, the $450 shark cordless robot mop, both from iRobot. The devices rely on cameras, sensors and artificial intelligence to create a map of your home. Once a map is created, you can label each room and tell the robots to clean specific areas or to clean everywhere. Dyson has a robot vacuum they’ll likely release this year to roll up on Roomba.
Powered by Dyson’s V2 motor, which Spins at 78,000rpm, Dyson informs us that it has 20% more suction than the 360 Eye. The Heurist has a ring of eight LEDs around its top camera that will ignite in poor lighting conditions, allowing the vac to carry on as normal. The 360 Eye was prone to getting lost in the dark, so this is a welcome addition. The Heurist has 8GB of memory on board (20x times the memory of the 360 Eye), so it is more than capable of retaining maps of your home’s layout. I did worry this might mean dirty corner spots but we needn’t have – it’s a consistently good clean.
The brush roll tends to wrap strands of hair around itself as well. The stick vac picked up 99% (on average) of our test sand from hardwood. The M X6 fared better across thicker midpile carpet though, earning a higher sand pickup average of 52.2%. It enables the robot to both scrub hard surfaces and vacuum carpets and rugs simultaneously. You can look at the design for clues as to when you might encounter problems. The G30 Edge (£230) is a dinky little cleaner that does a good job tackling the dusty tumbleweeds.
The size is probably due to extra cargo like a mop and its water tank. What the design didn’t quite make room for is an extraordinary dust bin capacity, so Roborock dropping an auto-empty dock was clutch. Many reports from other happy uses indicate that the collection bin doesn’t always get full before needing to be emptied. Pet hair will ball up and collect in the corners, resulting in a full indication, even though there is plenty of room left in the container. These battery operated towers will send an infrared signal that creates an invisible barrier your vacuum will not cross. You can set it in doorways to prevent access to a room or area, or turn on radius mode to surround items such as pet food bowls and easily knocked over items. The 980 also has touch sensors to prevent it from colliding with obstacles and furniture. If a collision is detected, it will reverse and go around the obstacle without causing damage.
Lastly, the Dyson’s suction was not as strong as my extremely powerful Miele bagged vacuum. But after two weeks of vacuuming hardwood floors and carpets with the stick, I didn’t feel a need to plug in the full-size shark cordless vacuum. It can be a pain to be constantly cleaning up after a shedding pet. While you love your furry friends, their hair and dandruff can quickly pile up and get caught in fibers or under furniture.
