2017 Weber Genesis II: First Impressions

I love cooking outdoors over live fire and smoke whatever the weather, using various grills, smokers, and wood-fired ovens to produce epic food. My goal with this site is to help as many people as possible enjoy and be good at doing the same. Like most gas grills, the Genesis II E-310 scores big in this category.

Indirect cooking relies on getting the temperature to hold at specific points, whether it’s just to cook a chicken breast through or the hours-long process of cooking pork butt. You’re not searing—just using the grill like an oven to cook the food the way you want it. The three burners put out 32,000 BTUs per hour over the 529 total square inches of cooking space. The main weber q cooking are is 424 square inches and the warming rack adds another 105. I learned that while its burners are mighty, they also offer a wide temperature range which can be unforgiving if you’re not careful. For example, when I turned the Genesis II’s burner dials all the way up, after 10 minutes the temperature under the hood easily cracked 600 degrees (633.7 in fact).

In my opinion, the grates do not get hot enough for grill marks to happen. I have previously owned three fantastic Weber barbecues, one Weber Q and two of the previous Genesis with sear station. My last unit was damaged in a storm and needed replacement. It had no sear station, but the three burners were more powerful and that this unit would grill as well as the sear station model.

It will certainly take the guesswork out of learning its temperature settings. Still, $950 all-in is a heck of a lot of cash to spend on a grill, especially for the more casual outdoor cook. After that I arranged the patties on the grill in a rectangular pattern (two patties high, three portable bbq across) with 1.5 to 2 inches spacing between them. I inserted one of the iGrill probes into the center, front patty. I closed the hood, and gave the burgers a flip after 6 minutes. With the lid closed again, I recorded how long it took the internal burger temp to hit 145 degrees.

The grill comes with a handy two-door cupboard under the grill which will no doubt be handy for keeping utensils, saucers and plates. The lid can be opened and closed as per need, meaning that you can maintain the temperature efficiently, allowing your food to be well cooked inside and out. As far as I know, it’s still stuck and the lights are still on. So, there are two fuel gauges right next to each other, which display exactly the same information. A few nights after I got the new Weber Genesis II LX grill on my roof deck, I texted my buddy Ted, proposing beer and burgers at my place.

I also set the left and right burners to the midway mark as indicated by on their dials. Since indirect heat is the goal here, I left the center burner off. One huge advantage of Weber’s Genesis II grill design is it’s a snap to clean. They’re also spaced out well so pulling the machine apart for maintenance is easy. Weber also built an elegant grease management system at the heart of the cooker.

I fell in love with the warming rack area as it kept my food warm. With a surface of 156 square inches, it offered plenty of space. Both the lid and the grates are finished off with porcelain enameled cast iron, making for superior heat retention.
