The seat and down tubes, as well as the top tube on the largest frame sizes, are slightly oversize at 29.5 mm in diameter. And that’s really where the similarities between Nishiki and Schwinn end. Schwinn bikes are used by cyclists of all levels, from beginners to experts. The company is mongoose bmx bike known for its attention to detail and quality craftsmanship. Nishiki bikes are used by some of the world’s top cyclists, including Tour de France winner Cadel Evans.
Aluminum is a lighter and more durable material, which gives Nishiki bikes an advantage when it comes to speed and maneuverability. These mostly 10-speed bikes were introduced in the 1960s to compete with the influx of European racing bikes. By the early ’70s, the Varsity and Continental had become leading models and were produced in large numbers up until the 1980s. It was their top-of-the-line model, made with high-quality components and only produced in relatively limited numbers. They had excellent Reynolds steel frames and high-end Campagnolo groupsets.
All Schwinn bikes post-1948 have serial numbers, which you can search in Google to determine the model and help decide whether or not it’s worth buying. You can find the serial number either underneath the bottom bracket, the rear dropout, or in the head tube. Of course, at the other end of the table, older models (think pre-1960s) are going to be more outdated in terms of their technology and performance.

Although they were fabricated in the same shop as the Paramounts, from there Schwinn’s fillet-brazed frames took a different production path. Paramounts continued through their own paint and assembly processes, while the fillet-brazed models were added to the assembly line with high-volume Schwinn flash-welded frames for serial-number stamping, electrostatic painting, and final assembly. Hence Paramount serial numbers are unique to Paramounts and serve as a tally of Paramount production, while serial numbers on the fillet-brazed models were mixed in with other Schwinn models.
In terms of similarities, both brands offer a wide range of models to suit different riders, budgets, and riding styles. Both brands also have a strong focus on quality, offering bikes that are built to last. On bikes with original paint the model decal, “CrMo” decal on the seat tube, bullet-pointed seatstay tops, and round “Schwinn-Chicago” badge on the head tube will indicate one of Schwinn’s fillet-brazed 10-speed bicycles. If these tubes are less than 1 1/8 inch in diameter, it is not a fillet-brazed model. If you find a welding seam inside the seat tube it is not a fillet-brazed model. Alloy rims, double-butted spokes, leather Brooks saddles, and lighter weight also differentiate the fillet-brazed models from the higher volume, flash-welded Schwinns.
My 14-year-old sticks with the hip-hop rides, and my 12-year-old follows along with a football pregame ride. They’re dual-sided, allowing you to clip in with bike shoes or slip regular shoes into cages, which is convenient, if a little clunky and inelegant. But some users complain about the pedals falling off or loosening (which the company insists is a user-assembly problem). I haven’t had any issues with mine, but, for what it’s worth, my husband, a bike guy who’s quite handy, helped with assembly.
