All that noise makes me hesitant to really push the bike on the descents, fearful that the whole thing just might fall apart. A great bike isn’t worth very much if you don’t feel comfortable riding it. So start by ensuring the bike you’re eyeing is the right size for you.
At the time of publication, the size large Schwinn Axum bikes are available for purchase at Walmart.com. I wouldn’t recommend it for someone willing to spend up to $1,000 though, since spending more will get buyers better suspension and brakes for a more enjoyable trail experience overall. Drivetrains on bikes at this price point tend to be a disappointment, requiring constant schwinn bicycles tweaking to keep them running smoothly. I tested an earlier version of the Axum last year and was never able to get the bike to shift correctly due to a maxed-out B-screw caused by a weak derailleur part. This bike uses the same AXS drivetrain, though fortunately this time I haven’t had any problems. I found the bike pedals and shifts well enough for 20-mile+ rides.
The 29″ wheels provide excellent support and suspension on the toughest terrains and tracks. This mountain bike has an aluminum frame that delivers sturdiness and durability. Schwinn’s other asset, the bicycle business, had shrunk from 100,000 high-priced models in 1900, to 30,000 discounted models thirty years later. Wearable parts like the chain, cables, brake pads, tires, tubes, the freewheel, etc. are less important. It’s also a good idea to inspect the drivetrain components and brakes. Shift through the gears and look at the overall condition of the derailleurs and shifters.
The name Schwinn doesn’t ring of dirt jumping or single-track riding. On the other hand, Mongoose is a company that has attempted to position itself as an authority in the mountain bike culture of extremes. The Mongoose bike company has long known that to make great frames; you need great welds. The company exhibits some excellent aluminum welding skills that are apparent on the bike frames.

Instead, most Schwinn derailleur bikes were marketed to the general leisure market, equipped with heavy “old timer” accessories such as kickstands that cycling aficionados had long since abandoned.
