Although they were fabricated in the same shop as the Paramounts, from there Schwinn’s fillet-brazed frames took a different production path. Paramounts continued through their own paint and assembly processes, while the fillet-brazed models were added to the assembly line with high-volume Schwinn flash-welded frames for serial-number stamping, electrostatic painting, and final assembly. Hence Paramount serial numbers are unique to Paramounts and serve as a tally of Paramount production, while serial numbers on the fillet-brazed models were mixed in with other Schwinn models.

Aluminum is a lighter and more durable material, which gives Nishiki bikes an advantage when it comes to speed and maneuverability. These mostly 10-speed bikes were introduced in the 1960s to compete with the influx of European racing bikes. By the early ’70s, the Varsity and Continental had become leading models and were produced in large numbers up until the 1980s. It was their top-of-the-line model, made with high-quality components and only produced in relatively limited numbers. They had excellent Reynolds steel frames and high-end Campagnolo groupsets.

Schwinn’s catalog copy for the last fillet-brazed Superior ( ) did begin to mention “hand made” and a little more on fillet brazing. Again, perhaps Schwinn didn’t highlight the fillet brazed models for fear of overloading its handbuild capacity. In 1978 production of the fillet-brazed Superior stopped, which schwinn bicycles marked the end of production for a fine Schwinn frameset whose basic design had been in service since 1938. Today fillet brazing is a fabrication method best suited for custom and specialty bicycles, yet from 1938 to 1978 you could walk into any Schwinn shop and buy this kind of bike off the rack.

To maintain uncompromising quality ride after ride, the SC 5 features a patent-pending bottom bracket that exceeds industry standards, rust-defying materials and rock solid construction. Our patent-pending, durable, threadless Morse Taper design keeps the pedals fastened tightly to the bike and prevents breakage. Interestingly, Schwinn’s schwinn bicycles 1970’s catalogs didn’t really differentiate the fillet-brazed CrMo models either. They were simply shown on the next catalog page, right before the Continental page. No separate catalog or distinct section for “lightweight touring and racing bicycles,” and no detailed discussion of the benefits of seamless CrMo tubing and fillet brazing.

They lost prestige compared to other US brands due to their reliance on imports, yet also couldn’t produce bicycles as cheaply as foreign rivals. Throughout the 1950s Schwinn continued expanding and buying up smaller companies. Schwinn also began producing a lightweight racing-style bike to rival those being imported from Europe, which at the time had become incredibly popular. Schwinn bikes were an iconic household brand name of bicycle in the US for nearly all of the 20th century. We have our bike set up to face the TV so we can either watch a show or do a Peloton ride.

In terms of similarities, both brands offer a wide range of models to suit different riders, budgets, and riding styles. Both brands also have a strong focus on quality, offering bikes that are built to last. On bikes with original paint the model decal, “CrMo” decal on the seat tube, bullet-pointed seatstay tops, and round “Schwinn-Chicago” badge on the head tube will indicate one of Schwinn’s fillet-brazed 10-speed bicycles. If these tubes are less than 1 1/8 inch in diameter, it is not a fillet-brazed model. If you find a welding seam inside the seat tube it is not a fillet-brazed model. Alloy rims, double-butted spokes, leather Brooks saddles, and lighter weight also differentiate the fillet-brazed models from the higher volume, flash-welded Schwinns.

[The Schwinn also includes three-pound weights.] And while it doesn’t have the fancy, 22-inch touchscreen that Peloton provides, you can use pretty much any phone or tablet to connect and stream classes. The bike itself needs to be assembled, and though my husband and I are not the handiest of folks, we managed to put it together with minimal effort. The company celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1945 with Fifty Years of Schwinn-Built Bicycles, dedicated to the company’s founder Ignatz Schwinn, who was 85 years old that year.
