The subsequent fallout in the cycling community was devastating to Huffy, but not surprising considering the nature of the athletes involved. In 1962, Peter Mole of the John T. Bill & Co contacted Huffman with a concept for producing a bicycle based on a motorcycle, which he called the High Rise. Mole developed the bike based on heavily modified children’s bicycles that were becoming popular with pre-teens in Southern California, and which mimicked the appearance of customized “chopper” motorcycles. The High Rise had a long banana seat with supporting struts and tall “ape-hanger” handlebars.

It pointed out that in 1997 nearly 60 percent of the bikes sold in the United States were produced by foreign manufacturers. The company said bicycles produced in Asia typically cost 10 to 20 percent less than comparable U.S.-produced models. This leaves companies like Huffy with no alternative but to adopt a competitive mix of domestic and non-domestic products.
As the industry revived itself toward the end of the 1970s, Huffman decided to take an aggressive marketing stance. Children again became the primary focus of the bike industry and Huffman introduced a new flashy, motocross-style bike called Thunder Trail. Designed to look like a motorcycle with mongoose bicycles waffle handle-grips, knobby tires, and racing-like number plates on the front, the new models also sported bright, jazzy colors and decals. Not content to settle for what they hoped might sell, Huffman held focus groups in shopping centers to determine which features were the most popular.

Huffy is planning to move the headquarters where it designs all the bikes bearing its iconic brand to a new home in Miami Twp. This exciting new venture is a collaboration between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Merlin Entertainment. The new agreement between Merlin and Sony Pictures names “Jumanji” as a multi-territory exclusive, meaning you’ll only be able to see it at Merlin’s parks. It will be called “Jumanji – the Adventure” and is described as a “dark ride for adventure lovers of all ages” in the press release.

During the Great Depression, Horace decided he could make money by providing a more inexpensive means of transportation and, in 1934, Huffman began producing bicycles.
