According to the brand, this slim robot vacuum operates quietly — at about the same volume as a working microwave — despite boasting 2000 Pa of suction power. The robot vacuum automatically increases suction when extra vacuuming is needed. To get the best of both robot worlds, there are bundles of vacuum and mopping robot devices that can talk to each other. Set the robot vacuum to remove all the dust and dirt , then a robot mop can wash the floor. It may take a while to complete both steps, but it’s manageable either on a scheduled clean or with the push of a few buttons on the app. In testing, the Roomba s9+ performed the best of any robot vac on hardwood flooring. Its D-shaped design came within an inch and a half of the corner, picking up everything it could reach. The performance was still solid on carpeting with only about 10% of the flour left, 5% of the kitty litter, and no coffee grounds or pet hairs to be found after testing.
Another option is to set up do-not-cross lines or no-go zones, which is a great way to keep bots out of areas where they tend to get stuck or make a mess . Besides, most good robots at all prices are pretty good at avoiding bot-trapping obstacles. And bot owners tend to get in the habit of picking up the kinds of floor-bound clutter that can create a problem—toys, shoes, laundry, even certain lightweight floor mats—so that the robot can work effectively.
Then there are the top-of-the-line Roomba s9 and self-emptying Roomba s9+, which we do not recommend. Instead of the classic puck shape, it has a D-shaped body and extra-wide brushes to improve its edge-cleaning and corner-cleaning abilities. It also has four times more raw suction than the already-strong bissell crosswave cordless Roomba i3 EVO, i7, or j7. That helps it consistently pick up larger debris like cat litter or yard waste better than most robots, though it still doesn’t come close to deep-cleaning dust from a rug like a traditional vacuum. We don’t like the s9 because it’s one of the clumsiest navigators we’ve tested.
Just don’t watch it too closely—it acts a little weird sometimes. Shag and other high-pile rugs may have too high a threshold for the robot to pass over, or the fibers could clog the brush. Some models will even feature an automated higher suction setting for deep cleaning carpets. We weren’t able to test any of them before the 2021 holiday season, but we’re confident that the Shark and lower-end Samsung will work similarly to all the other laser-nav robots described in the previous few paragraphs.
