Couple years later I returned to Flagstaff in 1971 and bought my first new Schwinn Continental at Flagstaff sportsman where the City Hall sits now….again road that one all over the place . It was left pretty much all original with the tool bag and the generator light still works just needed tires but the bike is in beautiful shape so now I switch from one to the other when I ride . We’d recommend it to more experienced cyclists who are comfortable with tuning and repair work on the fly. A. Gears allow you to maintain a comfortable cadence whether you’re going along the flat or up and down hills. Road racers and off-roaders are likely to come across a greater variety of inclines or terrain, mongoose bmx bike so, in general, they have more low-gear options. Given Schwinn’s reputation for high quality, you might be surprised to find that its men’s bikes start at around $250, and there are several mountain, cruiser, and folding bikes for under $300. When you’re not using it, the whole thing folds flat for easy storage.
The Paramount series had limited production numbers, making vintage examples quite rare today. The 1960 Varsity was introduced as an 8-speed bike, but in mid-1961 was upgraded to 10 speeds. Other road bikes were introduced by Schwinn in the early and mid 1960s, such as the Superior, Sierra, and Super Continental, but these were only produced for a few years. The Varsity and schwinn bicycles Continental sold in large numbers through the 1960s and early 1970s, becoming Scwhinn’s leading models. The wheel rims were likewise robust, chromed, stamped steel with a unique profile designed to hold the tire bead securely, even if pressure were low or lost. After a series of production cuts and labor force reductions, Schwinn was able to restructure its operations.
While I’m no longer growing (at least not up…out is a different story!), I wasn’t sure exactly how/where I’d be riding the most. I wanted a model that I could ride on the paved streets of our neighborhood and the gravel trails at local parks. As mentioned above, the hybrid combines features of both road and mountain bike styles. The Circuit has skinnier tires and a lighter frame than a mountain bike. It’s a great general-purpose bike that can handle multiple terrains and riding conditions.
Shwinn’s has a reputaion for budget range bikes, however Shwinn do have a higher end range which are better quality. Remeber, if you are a serious mountain biker or road rider, then you might want to invest in differnt brands, but for the average cyclist a Shwinn bike is a perfectly good option. Schwinn make just about every type of recreational, commuter and fitness bike that you can imagine, plus they have an extensive range for children. They are not a brand that makes performance machines designed for road racing, triathlons, or the various mountain biking disciplines. If you want to ride to keep fit, as an alternative form of transport, or for the enjoyment of being outside and exploring on two wheels, Schwinn is an excellent choice.
Faced with a downward sales spiral, Schwinn went into bankruptcy in 1992. The company and name were bought by the Zell/Chilmark Fund, an investment group, in 1993. Zell moved Schwinn’s corporate headquarters to Boulder, Colorado. Inspired, he designed a mass-production bike for the youth market known as Project J-38.
