If you replace the chain you’re probably also looking at replacing the cogs, they wear down together and a new chain on old cogs is likely going to slip. Try de-rusting the drive train first, if it’s a lost cause you’ll have to talk to parts people or a shop or do some research as to exactly which cogs you need. Stiff links and surface corrosion you can deal with. After that, I personally wouldn’t worry if the chain is just worn.
